The Gamma-Pi Chapter at MIT is hosting their Nearly Naked, Nearly Mile event at 5:30 p.m. on Saturday, April 19, 2014, to raise funds for The Sean A. Collier Self Sponsor Scholarship, which will fund a recruit through the Lowell Police Academy every year. Sean Collier was an officer at MIT who was allegedly killed last year by the Boston Marathon bombing suspects. The event will also collect clothes to be donated to the American Red Cross.
Participants in the event will arrive wearing clothing that they wish to donate to the American Red Cross and then will strip down to “nearly naked” for the run. The run will take place through the heart of MIT’s campus.
“We hope to show the strength and resilience of the MIT and Boston community by celebrating together in good spirits. We have set up a page at nearlynaked.mit.edu where anyone can make a tax-deductible donation to the scholarship and learn more about the event on April 19th. We have begun fundraising on campus, and will reach out to other university campuses as the event date approaches,” said Gamma-Pi President Arya Azma.
In addition to the Nearly Naked, Nearly Mile event, Brother Ian Matts, who was a friend of Officer Collier, will be running in the Boston Marathon as part of Team Collier Strong, which is comprised of family and friend’s of Officer Collier.
“Gamma-Pi is working hard to make this event big and raise as much money as possible for the Sean A. Collier Self Sponsor Scholarship,” said Azma.
