The Supreme Executive Committee selected Brother R. D. “Dan” Burck (Tau, University of Texas at Austin, ’51) as the 2015 Man of the Year. Brother Burck is the former Chancellor of The University of Texas System and today continues his involvement as a member of the UT System Chancellor’s Council Executive Committee.
Prior to joining the management team of the UT System in 1988, Brother Burck enjoyed a successful 33-year career in the private sector at both the national and international levels. Among his many accomplishments, Brother Burck managed Getty Oil Company’s worldwide holdings and helped create and launch ESPN, where he was Vice President and founding director.
Brother Burck’s second cousin, Cyrus R. Smith, was the recipient of Kappa Sigma’s first Man of the Year Award in 1937. Brother Smith was President of American Airlines.
Brother Burck is a 1956 graduate of the University of Texas at Austin. He was married in 1955 to Jo Richardson, also a UT graduate, who passed away in 1997. In 1998, Brother Burck married Penny Hight Richards of San Antonio, who also attended UT.
The banquet honoring Brother Burck will be held at the Bullock Museum in Austin, Texas, on March 28, 2015.
