Brother Gregory S. Hunt (Beta-Upsilon, NC State, ’79), who currently serves on the Supreme Executive Committee as Worthy Grand Scribe, has served as a mentor to countless Brothers throughout North Carolina and especially at his home Chapter, Beta-Upsilon at NC State. For that reason, when an idea was presented to endow a scholarship in his name, the response was tremendous.
Almost all Brothers from Beta-Upsilon, no matter their age, are familiar with the work that Brother Hunt has done to keep Kappa Sigma at NC State. Many remember him attending Chapter meetings and events at the Chapter house. Others, who came before him, are familiar with the work he has done even though they may have never met him. Fewer are familiar with the work he does with the General Fraternity, but there is no doubt that Greg’s contributions are far and wide, far greater than any single award or recognition could justify. Accordingly, with the establishment of the Gregory S. Hunt Scholarship-Leadership Award, Brothers for years to come will have an appreciation for the sacrifices Brother Hunt has made and continues to make for Kappa Sigma and especially Beta-Upsilon.
To date, thirty-seven Brothers and one Alumni Association have contributed to the Gregory S. Hunt Scholarship-Leadership Award. Thirty-four of those Brothers are from Beta-Upsilon and together they span 60 years of initiates at Beta-Upsilon.
Once fully funded, the Gregory S. Hunt SLA will be presented annually to a Brother from Beta-Upsilon or a nearby Chapter in the event that no one from Beta-Upsilon qualifies. The award will not only look at academic achievements but also focus heavily on Kappa Sigma involvement, a true reflection of the balanced approach Brother Hunt has taken in his commitments to the Fraternity, as well as his personal, academic, and professional lives.
The Fraternity and most especially Beta-Upsilon Brothers are forever indebted to the good work of Brother Hunt and are optimistic that his legacy will inspire others to truly live the Star and Crescent, not for a day, an hour, or a college term only, but for life.
