The Delta-Chi Chapter at Mississippi State University hosted its 16th annual Kappa Sigma Charity Classic on Saturday, April 26, 2014. The event pitted the Delta-Chi Chapter against MSU’s Sigma Chi chapter in a charity football game. This year, through a combination of private donors, chapter fundraising and a donation from Sigma Chi, the Delta-Chi Chapter was able to raise more than $94,000. This is a feat unmatched in Mississippi State fraternity fundraising history.
“I am so proud of the Brothers of Delta-Chi. The chapter has had such a long history of giving to A Greater Cause.” said Worthy Grand Master of Ceremonies Toby H. Taylor.
The charities who benefited from this year’s efforts were Habitat for Humanity, Reclaimed Project and John Clark Packer, a 2001 initiate of the Delta-Chi Chapter.
The game saw several lead changes, but in the end, Kappa Sigma took the lead in the final six minutes of the game and went on to defeat Sigma Chi 22-19. The victory was due in part to the dedication of several of MSU’s football players, including Brother, and MSU kicker, Evan Sobiesk, MSU starting QB Dak Prescott, Gus Walley (TE), Damian Williams (QB), Nick Fitzgerald (QB), Ben Beckwith (OL) and Fred Walker (MSU’s QB communicator).
Prescott wrote up a 16-page playbook for the team, and several of the players of MSU’s football team began regularly attending Delta-Chi practice two weeks before the game. Their energy on the sideline on game day galvanized the team and legitimized the event. Delta-Chi GM Walton Chaney stated that the event could not have been a success without their selfless contributions.
“I am overwhelmed by the work and support of the chapter, donors, coaches and everyone else who had a hand in this year’s Charity Classic. Many hours of planning went into making this event a success, and every minute spent working to make this the best Charity Classic yet was worth it. This goes to show that when everyone buys into one vision and one goal, great things can be achieved. This success would not have happened without our Charity Classic Chairman Scott Miller. He truly deserves all of the praise. We are excited by the new precedent that this Charity Classic has set for the chapter, and we look forward to reaching new heights over the coming years,” said Chaney.
Major contributors to the event include: Deep South Pout, a local Starkville business, donated $15,000 to Reclaimed Project. The Horton Family, Brother Bowen Horton’s family, matched a chapter donation to Reclaimed Project donation for $20,000. The chapter raised $54,000 from fundraising. Sigma Chi at Mississippi State donated $5,000 to play in the game.
“They truly understand being a Kappa Sigma means being a part of something bigger than yourself. Their efforts have raised an incredible $900,000 in the 16 year history of the Charity Classic.” said WGMC Taylor.
