Beta-Gamma Raises Nearly $5,450 for the American Cancer Society

The Beta-Gamma Chapter at the University of Missouri successfully raised $5,426.48 for the American Cancer Society through the worldwide fundraiser Relay for Life, held at the University of Missouri campus on April 25-26, 2014.
As a team, the Brothers of Beta-Gamma reached out to local businesses, family, friends and community members in their fundraising efforts. The chapter also gave individual donations to reach the team total.
“We were successful with our fundraising efforts because of the hard work from each Brother of the chapter,” said Brother Matthew Jacobi. “Unfortunately, every Brother in the chapter has been affected by cancer in some way.”
Relay for Life was founded in the 1985 as an event to raise awareness and fight the nation’s leading health concern, cancer. Since then, Relay for Life has raised more than $400 million a year to work towards eradicating the disease once and for all.
The Relay event takes place around a track. One member from each team walks around the track at all times, as a sign that cancer never sleeps. The Relay for Life at Mizzou event lasted 12 hours, and the Brothers of Beta-Gamma proudly kept a member walking throughout the entire night. Teams camped-out around the track and offered interactive fundraisers and games for other participants to raise money for their team total.
Beta-Gamma’s team campsite offered hot dogs, burgers and energy drinks for sale to add to their team total. There was also a bounce house at the site for the young participants to enjoy.
Additionally, Beta-Gamma was awarded the “Most Interactive pre-event Fundraiser” superlative for the first annual “Kappa Sigma Fish Fry for a Cure” event held at the chapter house on April 4, 2014. The fish fry ultimately raised more than $700 for the team total.
“I was happy to do Relay for Life because it’s for an extremely good cause,” said Brother Drew Winschel. “I hope to live in a world one day where no one has to hear the words ‘you have cancer’.”
