The Beta-Rho Chapter of Kappa Sigma at the University of Iowa stayed busy this year with fundraising, signing for a new chapter house and growing the chapter membership. This hectic year was capped by an excellent performance in the University of Iowa’s Relay for Life event on April 2, 2016. The members of the Beta-Rho chapter were awarded the “Bronze Team” award by raising $3,485 throughout the event and finished the University of Iowa’s 2016 Relay For Life as the second highest fundraising team for the event.
During the event, there were many activities that teams could participate in such as: Balloon Pop, a Zumba class, Newspaper Building, Tailgate Olympics, Food Eating Contest Relay, and other such events. Philanthropy chairman, Brodie Malatt (‘15), noted that “everyone who attended really enjoyed the event. Many members of our team have family who are either battling or have lost their battle to cancer. A lot of them expressed their gratitude for being able to participate in such an amazing event.”
One of the chapter’s spring pledges, Kody Pollitt said after the event, “I thought it was awesome that we did it. It’s pretty cool that we were the only fraternity there and came very close to raising the most money.” Brother Mallatt commented that,
“Personally, it was amazing to see the other survivors there. It was inspiring. Some were years into remission, while others still were growing back their hair from chemotherapy. It gave you this feeling of hope.”
While this was the chapter’s first year being involved in the event, it certainly won’t be their last. It was an exceptional bonding event for the brothers involved and the chapter is already planning to partner with the Relay for Life committee to help boost the event to the next level.
The 35 teams and 265 participants of the 2016 Relay For Life event at the University of Iowa finished the 24-hour event by collectively raising over $26,000 to benefit the American Cancer Society and help support the fight against cancer.
