Boston, MA – The Xi-Beta Chapter of the Kappa Sigma Fraternity of Northeastern University held its Fifth Annual Military Heroes 5K this past weekend on Saturday, October 14, 2017. The participants ran along the Charles River Esplanade, supporting Xi-Beta in raising a total of $7,028 For Kappa Sigma’s Military Heroes Campaign.
The Military Heroes 5K is Xi-Beta’s most notable community-based charity event, aligning its priorities alongside Kappa Sigma’s principal philanthropy program, the Military Heroes Campaign. The money Xi-Beta raised from donations and runner sign-ups, will go directly to the Kappa Sigma Military Heroes Campaign. Nationally, the Kappa Sigma Fraternity has raised over one million dollars for various programs and organizations that seek to provide aid to veterans of the US and Canadian Armed Forces and their families.
Xi-Beta was also joined by the Brothers of the Mu-Psi chapter of Kappa Sigma at Boston University and the Sisters of Northeastern’s Phi Omega chapter of Alpha Epsilon Phi on the Esplanade this year encouraging runners and enjoying various lawn games.
As the afternoon came upon the Boston area and the overcast sky began to drizzle, the runners were off. Unthwarted by the elements, participants raced from the Hatch Memorial Shell and circled the scenic Charles River Esplanade, set to the backdrop of the Boston skyline. Many interesting characters made an appearance on the course this year as well. A chicken (Brother Tripp Morris), Egyptian Pharaoh (Brother Dave Abdow), Jean Jacket American (Brother Zack Herchen), Greek God (Brother Ryan Piccirillo), and a horse (Brothers Erik Ryde and Santiago Dipilla) were seen bounding down the Esplanade. As an incentive to raise funds and attract Northeastern’s Panhellenic involvement, Brothers of Xi-Beta were sponsored to run by these various organizations with the sponsorees selecting the runner’s outfit.
In total, this year’s Military Heroes 5K saw 41 runners. This year’s winner of the 5K was past participant and local runner Dan Cleary with a time of 17:38.54.
TOP THREE MALES: Dan Cleary, Drew Katz, Brendan Jeffers
TOP THREE FEMALES: Kristen Gebhardt, Josie Wiltse, Charlotte Leggett
Xi-Beta would like to thank everyone who participated in this year’s Military Heroes 5K. We are so grateful to be able to host a such an important philanthropy event in the Boston community. Without generous donations from the community, participation of Northeastern organizations and clubs, Brothers and alumni, and family and friends, Xi-Beta would not be able to put on such a rewarding fundraiser. Xi-Beta hopes to bring awareness to such an extraordinary cause, inspiring others to participate and to see the true potential that comes from a community joining together for an honorable cause.
